Two Roses, Pink

It’s reported that the great painter, Georgia O’Keefe, once said,
“I hate flowers. I only paint them because they’re cheaper than models,
            and they don’t move.”
I don’t buy it.
Was she misquoted?
Was she joking?
Was she saying something just for effect?
I don’t know.
All I know is that the woman who produced the canvases
of the white camellia and the white rose was not a flower hater.
The woman who helped us see the pink calla in all its beauty
      respected that beauty.
You can see it in her brush strokes—she cannot hide her appreciation.
I don’t know if this photograph of two roses sharing life together
communicates my respect and appreciation or not.
I hope it does, because that’s what I feel.
These created wonders not only express love—they evoke love.
Mine at least.
Almost certainly Georgia O’Keefe’s.
Perhaps yours too.
